Scholars urged to do relevant research

Principal of The Polytechnic of the University of Malawi, Grant Kululanga, has challenged scholars studying for their master’s and doctor of philosophy degrees to consider doing research studies that will have an impact on the rural community.

Kululanga said this in an interview on Monday after Professor Sir Jim MacDonald, principal of University of Strathclyde in Scotland, visited the college to look at research studies that scholars have done under the centre for Water, Sanitation, Health and Appropriate Technology Development (Washted).

“Researchers should not just look at abstract things, but aim to conduct research studies that are relevant and improve the lives of the common Malawian,” said Kululanga.

In an interview, MacDonald said it is proper for students and researchers to translate what they do for the greater good of their community “if they are to live a mark on lives of several people”.

Washted is a training and research centre within The Polytechnic offering diverse range of expertise in engineering, environmental health, social and management and information fields.

The centre works with Malawi Renewable Energy Acceleration Programme, Scotland-Chikhwawa Health Initiative and Mwandama Millennium Village in Zomba.
